# Why Domain Rating matters

DR tells others how strong your backlinks are. The Trust Map shows which referring domains carry that strength and which pages they link from.

## The short answer

Domain Rating matters because it is the number search competitors, link partners and buyers use to judge your backlink strength. The score alone does not say which links carry it. The Trust Map does. Click a referring domain to see its DR and spam risk. You also see the exact page that links to you and the page it links to.

This is why Domain Rating matters. It is the number people check before they decide whether your website is worth their time.

A partner checks it before a link exchange. A buyer checks it before they make an offer. You check it against the websites that rank for your search terms. The score alone does not tell you what to do next. For that you need to see the websites behind it.

That is what the [Trust Map](https://verifieddr.com/authority-map) is for. It draws every referring domain around your website. Click one and you see its DR and its spam risk. You also see the page that links to you and the page it links to. This post explains why DR is worth tracking and then walks through the map step by step.

## In brief

- DR is a 0 to 100 estimate of backlink strength. It sets which search terms you can compete for and how partners judge you.
- The mix of referring domains matters more than the count. Relevant websites with real visitors carry weight. Spam and junk links do not.
- The Trust Map shows up to 60 referring domains around your website. The most important ones sit closest to the centre.
- Click a referring domain to see its DR and spam risk. The panel also shows the anchor text and the exact source page and target page of the link.
- Lost links stay on the map as dashed red lines. New link opportunities can be shown as free exchanges or paid placements.

## What Domain Rating measures

Domain Rating (DR) is a 0 to 100 score for backlink strength. Third-party providers calculate it from how many websites link to yours and how strong those websites are. A link from a strong website adds more than a link from a weak one. The scale also gets steeper as it rises. Going from DR 20 to DR 30 takes far fewer links than going from DR 50 to DR 60.

Google does not use DR. It runs its own ranking systems. DR is an outside estimate of the same thing those systems care about. That is the strength of the web pointing at you.

## Why Domain Rating matters

It sets what you can rank for. The pages in the Google top 10 for a search term have a DR of their own. When yours sits close to theirs you can compete on content. When yours sits far below it you mostly cannot. The [keyword difficulty checker](https://verifieddr.com/keyword-difficulty-checker) shows that gap for any search term.

It is how other websites judge you. Founders and editors use DR as a quick filter before they answer an email. A low score can end a link exchange request before it starts.

It is part of being found in AI answers. AI assistants quote pages from across the web. A website that trusted websites link to is easier to find. It is also easier to cite with confidence.

It gives you a benchmark. On 28 September 2026 the median DR of the 570 verified websites on VerifiedDR was 21. Our post on [what a good Domain Rating is](https://verifieddr.com/blog/what-is-a-good-domain-rating) breaks that number down by category and website age.

## The mix of referring domains matters more than the count

A referring domain is one website that links to you. Ten links from one website still count as one referring domain. So the number of referring domains says more than the number of backlinks.

The mix says more than either. Two websites with the same count can have very different profiles. One has links from relevant websites with real visitors. The other has links from link farms and scraper pages. The first one has a DR you can build on. The second has a DR that can fall the day those junk links get filtered out.

That is why VerifiedDR also shows [TrueDR](https://verifieddr.com/truedr). It checks whether real traffic and real referring websites support the score. Our study on [how many referring domains DR 50 takes](https://verifieddr.com/blog/how-many-referring-domains-dr-50) shows the same thing from another angle. Sites near DR 50 got there with very different numbers of domains. And [not all backlinks are created equal](https://verifieddr.com/blog/not-all-backlinks-are-created-equal) covers the signals DR leaves out.

## Open the Trust Map

The Trust Map used to be called the DR Map. It is the same feature with a clearer name. Add your website to VerifiedDR. Then pick Trust Map in the dashboard sidebar.

In the dashboard four numbers sit above the map. Referring domains is how many websites link to you. Dofollow links is the share of those links that pass strength. Lost backlinks counts the links that went away. Your DR is your current score. When there is DR history you can press play on the timeline. The map then rebuilds itself as your links arrived.

Public website profiles on VerifiedDR show a Trust Map too, once there are backlinks to show. So you can open the map of a competitor and see who links to them.

## Read the graph

Your website sits in the middle. Each referring domain is a card around it with its own DR ring. The map shows up to 60 referring domains. Most of those places go to live dofollow links, because those are the links that carry weight.

Position and size tell you what matters. The most important domains sit closest to the centre and have the largest cards. Importance is a score from 0 to 100. It weighs the DR of the linking website and its estimated traffic. Dofollow links score higher. Fresh links score higher. Websites that link to you more than once score higher. A lost link scores lower.

The lines tell you what kind of link it is. A coloured line is a dofollow link. A gray line is a nofollow link. A dashed red line is a link you lost. A solid red line is a live link from a website with spam signs. The legend lets you hide or show each kind. When you have 50 or more dofollow links the map hides nofollow links at first, so the strong links stay easy to read.

## Click a referring domain

Click any card and a panel opens on the right. The top shows whether the link is dofollow or nofollow and whether it is live or lost. It also shows the importance score. A website with a spam risk of 50 or more gets a Spam signs label.

Below that the panel lists ten facts about the link.

| Row | What it tells you |
| --- | --- |
| Domain Rating | How strong the linking website is. |
| Spam risk | Low, Medium or High, with the score out of 100. |
| Backlinks from domain | How many links this one website sends you. |
| Est. organic traffic | A third-party estimate of its monthly search visitors. |
| Topic | What the linking website is about. |
| Anchor text | The words the link sits on. |
| Source page | The exact page on their website that holds the link. |
| Target page | The page on your website the link points to. |
| First seen | The day the link was first found. |
| Last seen | The day the link was last confirmed. |

The panel ends with a link to the source page. When the website is also in the link exchange pool you get a button to exchange links with it. For a lost link that button reads Win this link back.

## See which pages earn your links

Source page and Target page are the two rows most people skip. They are the most useful ones.

The source page shows where the link lives. A link inside a real article on a relevant website is worth more than a link in a footer or on a page full of other links. Open it and look.

The target page shows which of your pages earned the link. Click through your strongest referring domains and note the target pages. You will often find that a few pages earn most of your good links. Those pages tell you what other websites find worth linking to. Write more like them. Link from them to the pages you want to rank.

The anchor text completes the picture. It shows the words other websites use to describe you. A natural mix of brand names and topic words is healthy. The same exact keyword on every link is not.

## Tell links that carry weight from junk

A link that carries weight has a few things in common. The linking website has a solid DR and low spam risk. It gets real visitors. Its topic fits yours. The link is dofollow and the last seen date is recent.

Junk looks different on the map. Cards fade toward gray as spam risk rises. At a spam risk of 50 or more they get a red warning badge and a red line. Known junk domains get a spam risk of 100. Those links add little and can drag your profile down. Do not build more of them.

Most profiles have both. The goal is not a perfect map. The goal is to know which links you would hate to lose and to get more like them.

## Watch the links you gain and lose

Lost links stay on the map as dashed red lines. The Lost backlinks number shows how many there are and when the last one went. Click a lost link and check its last seen date and source page. A lost link from a strong website is worth an email to ask for it back.

New links show up too. Below the map VerifiedDR tells you how many websites started linking to you this week. On the free plan you see that count. A program shows which websites they are.

## Use the opportunities

The map can also show websites that do not link to you yet. Turn on New opportunities in the legend. Two kinds appear. A free exchange is a verified website you can trade links with. A paid placement is a website that sells a placement through the marketplace.

Click one to see its DR and TrueDR. You also see its estimated visitors and a topic match score out of 100. The panel says why it could fit, from a niche match to a website that is only worth reviewing. A paid placement also shows its price and format. Nothing is sent until you review the website and the message. Nothing is charged until you check out.

Start with the websites that look like your strongest current links. Same topic. Real visitors. Low spam risk. That is how you grow a DR you can trust.

## See who links to you

Open the Trust Map. Click your strongest referring domain. Check the page it links from and the page it links to.
